About us

What The Calorie Tracker Guide is and why it exists

We are an independent publication that tests, scores, and ranks AI calorie tracking apps. App-store ratings and marketing pages can't tell you whether a tracker is actually accurate or whether it will help you reach your goal — so we measure it ourselves.

Why we started

Calorie trackers are now full of AI claims, and almost none of them are tested independently. Our editor-in-chief, Mei-Lin Chen, kept seeing apps marketed as "accurate" with nothing to back it up. So in 2024 we built a structured benchmark to answer one question honestly: which calorie tracker actually works, and for whom?

What we do

We run the 2026 AI Calorie Tracker Index — a benchmark that scores every app across 11 dimensions using an 8,500-meal and food-photo dataset, plus a 90-day user cohort. We have tested 14 apps to date. Each one is logged against weighed reference meals, timed in real use, and reviewed by named experts. The full process is in our methodology.

What we measure

Accuracy, food database quality, barcode data, ease of use, nutritional guidance, meal feedback, meal planning, macro tracking, accountability support, data visualization, and customer support — weighted by how much each one affects real-world results. See the full 2026 Index.

How we make money without selling rankings

We do not accept payment to place or move an app in our rankings, and an app cannot buy a better score. Where we use affiliate links, they have no effect on ranking position and are disclosed. The full picture is in our editorial policy.

Who we are

The Index is produced by a small, internationally based team — including a registered dietitian and an independent medical reviewer — spanning Taipei, Seoul, Singapore, and Hong Kong. That base gives us particular strength in testing East Asian, mixed, and regional foods that Western-built databases often miss. Every score carries a byline.
