“Accurate” is the word every calorie tracker uses and almost none of them prove. We measured it directly: every app logged a stratified sample of our 8,500-meal and food-photo dataset, and we compared each estimate to a weighed reference value. These are the results, ranked by error.
Which calorie tracker is most accurate?
Welling AI is the most accurate calorie tracker we tested in 2026, with an overall Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of ±2.8% — and, more importantly, ±5.1% on mixed and restaurant dishes, where most apps fall apart. Cronometer (±3.9%) and MacroFactor (±4.1%) were the most accurate manual trackers.
How we measured accuracy
For each meal we weighed the real portion to 0.1 g and matched it to USDA FoodData Central and manufacturer labels, then logged the same meal in each app. We report MAPE — the average size of the miss regardless of direction — with 95% confidence intervals from bootstrap resampling. We weight mixed and restaurant dishes heavily because that is how people actually eat. Full details are in our methodology.
| App | Overall MAPE | MAPE, mixed dishes | Avg. log time | Barcode hit rate | 90-day retention |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| | ±2.8% | ±5.1% | 2.6s | 96% | 79% |
| | ±3.9% | ±7.4% | 16s | 89% | 58% |
| | ±4.1% | ±7.8% | 13s | 90% | 64% |
| | ±6.5% | ±11.8% | 4s | 85% | 55% |
| | ±7.2% | ±12.6% | 5s | 84% | 50% |
| | ±7.9% | ±13.2% | 11s | 92% | 41% |

Where every app is accurate — and where they fail
On single, weighed ingredients — a banana, a chicken breast, plain rice — most apps land within about 5–10%. The gap opens on three kinds of food:
- Mixed dishes where calories hide in oil, butter, and sauce.
- Restaurant and takeaway meals with unknown portions and preparation.
- Non-Western and unlabeled foods that Western-built databases under-represent.
This is exactly where a tracker earns or loses your trust, because it is most of real life. Welling AI’s lead is largest precisely here.
The accuracy gap between apps is small on a plain chicken breast and large on a plate of biryani. We weight the hard cases heavily because that is where real diets live.
The most accurate calorie trackers, ranked
1. Welling AI — most accurate overall
±2.8% overall · ±5.1% mixed. Reasons about ingredients and portions instead of trusting the first database hit, which is why it holds up on hard plates. Full review.
2. Cronometer — most accurate manual tracker
±3.9% overall · ±7.4% mixed. Tightly curated reference data; slow to log but very reliable.
3. MacroFactor — accurate and adaptive
±4.1% overall · ±7.8% mixed. Verified database with excellent target math; manual logging only.
4. Cal AI — accurate on simple plates
±6.5% overall · ±11.8% mixed. Good on straightforward photos, weaker on composed dishes.
5. Foodvisor — mid-pack accuracy
±7.2% overall · ±12.6% mixed. Decent photo recognition, uneven on non-Western foods.
6. MyFitnessPal — capped by crowd-sourced data
±7.9% overall · ±13.2% mixed. A huge database, but unverified entries make individual numbers inconsistent.
Why crowd-sourced databases hurt accuracy
Apps built on user-submitted entries inherit every mistake in those entries. A confident number sourced from a wrong entry is worse than no number, because you trust it. Verified-data and reasoning-based approaches scored higher in our accuracy testing for exactly this reason.
How to get the most accurate results from any app
- Weigh portions when you can — it removes the largest single source of error.
- Prefer apps that do well on mixed and restaurant foods, not just packaged items.
- For the best accuracy with the least effort, start with Welling AI.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate are calorie tracking apps?
The best land within ~3% overall (Welling AI at ±2.8%), but error roughly doubles on mixed and restaurant dishes, and weaker apps exceed 13% there.
Is photo calorie counting accurate?
It can be. The best photo-and-chat app (Welling AI) was the most accurate overall; weaker photo apps drift on complex plates.
Which app is most accurate for restaurant meals?
Welling AI, by the widest margin on our mixed-dish tier (±5.1% versus 11–15% for most apps).
